First of all, the artwork's not free! .....But it is very inexpensive.
When you buy a royalty free image, you get an illustration from a professional illustrator which would cost hundreds of pounds to commission and buy as a 'one off'. You pay very little (usually about £10-£15 for a farily detailed image)
and you can pretty much use it as much as you like on any number of projects, without paying royalties on each usage.
It is a great low cost way of obtaining high quality artwork for all sorts of projects -e.g. posters, websites, promotions, newsletters, magazines, editorial. (The copyright still remains with the artist, and you cannot re-sell the image)
If you do want to sell the image (on a tshirt range, card range etc) then you must purchase an extended licence from www.istockphoto.com. This still works out much cheaper than an original commisioned piece of artwork.
